No telly; rusty tin bath; times they were hard; Cold water; dolly-tub mangle; loo in the yard. We’d charabanc holidays; red lino on floors, Donkey-stoned steps; left-open, front doors. Our nippers were safe to play out in the park, Our teenagers were okay; off-out in the dark. Wages in brown envelopes, £sd not decimal– We’d atone our sins at Saturday confessional. Plenty of kids - practising Catholics back then; We’d eat beef-dripping us working-class men. No graffiti, no muggings (we had nowt to rob), ‘Appy with a shilling; even ‘appier with ten-bob. People felt camaraderie in the ‘good ole days’, Hard-working honest men - in so many ways. Milkmen and postmen would whistle and sing; Going to flicks with a girl was quite a mad fling. She’d get into ‘trouble’- it always caused strife: As ‘shotgun weddings’ were a grim start to life! Gaskell, A. Cheers, Angie Angela Gaskell (HDG Secretary). |
